The village of Santa Colomba is situated between the territories of the plain of Lucca, the Era and
the Valdarno, on top of a hill that bears his name north of the river Arno, opposite to the Gusciana
Canal as it flows into it. The country is bordered on the south by Pontedera and Montecalvoli and to
the north by the fraction of Four Roads.
Santa Colomba is about 3 km from the capital city and just over 25 km from Pisa.
History
Santa Colomba hill takes its name from an ancient church located here, which no longer exists. The
town in medieval times was part of the grange (or `gancia`) Montecchio (Calcinaia) and was owned
by the Carthusian Monastery from 1399 to 1827. The cult of the holy dove was brought into the
country by the Carthusians in 1706, similarly, as it was made in Bientina (1699) with that of St.
Valentine.
